Hot
Tub/Spa History:
Hydrotherapy
has long been a sought after luxury. The waters of Bath, of what
is now England, a 120° Fahrenheit
natural hot spring, were used from about 800 BC, and British
Royalty frequented them
into the 20th Century.
Dating
back to 500 BC, the Greek elite would use natural hot springs
as a place to converse on various
philosophical beliefs
as well as
treat physical ailments.
The
Romans used their hot bath spa (caldarium) to replenish the mind
and body, and the term "spa," Hungarian
for the cure, became the generic expression under the Roman
Empire referring
to the natural
springs in Spa, Belgium.
Japanese
custom included the use of "ofuro" or
hot water bathing in freestanding wooden tubs, and occupational
forces from
World War II brought this knowledge back with them to the
United States. The first Japanese "ofuro" inspired hot
tubs began to emerge in California in the 1960’s. Early
prototypes were created using oak barrels, wine tanks, and olive
vats.
